On Consent – In a Seventh Grade Classroom

Hey, you! The mom of that twelve-year-old boy who leers like some fifty-year-old drunken uncle. Start teaching him that no means no. Right Fucking Now. You should have been teaching him this already. Teach him that consent is as real as the shoes on his feet and the laces he ties in double-knots. Teach him … Continue reading On Consent – In a Seventh Grade Classroom

I Told Him No

He told me how brave I was, writing my story into a sea of stigma, how my words, my voice, would break waves and save souls, a lighthouse for the mentally ill, the distraught, the unloved. I told him no. He told me how beautiful I was, smiling sadly with eyes like burnt moons hiding … Continue reading I Told Him No

We Never Made The Headlines – Stephanie Bennett-Henry
